The main selling point of this story is that it's Katy Manning's Jo Grant crossing over with Torchwood, UNIT's sister organization (not officially, though the two certainly have similarities). The other selling point is that it's a sequel to The Green Death, and it juxtaposes itself against that story really well.
One of my favorite things about this story, besides getting to hear from Jo again, was the series of conversations between Jo and Jack debating whether they ought to use violence against the maggots. This strikes a parallel between the Doctor and Jack, as last time she was down here, the Doctor did not immediately resort to violence, but to discussion. Jack is the opposite, and this audio really demonstrates that difference between Doctor Who and Torchwood. Beyond the presence of the maggots and Boss, this story ties into The Green Death rather well, with discussion of why the Doctor leaves his companions behind and references to the Nut Hutch and Nancy who featured in the original story. By bringing two former companions together, Big Finish had an excellent opportunity to do some intense character work between the two of them, and they certainly made the most of the opportunity. This is the first Torchwood audio I've listened to, and I really appreciate the format. This story is a two-hander for the majority of its runtime and that allows for much more character work than we see in a typical Doctor Who episode here. The focus here isn't on the bug-eyed monsters, but rather on the difference between Jo and Jack and the dynamic and relationship they have. My only complaint with this episode is the scene where Jack and Jo kiss. It just felt out of character for Jo to cheat on her husband so willingly. The acting was done well, but the scene just didn't quite sit right with me. Overall, this was a fun episode. It's great to hear from Jo again, and this story did a good job at hooking me on Torchwood audios.
