Happy Torchwood Tuesday! With my second experience listening to Torchwood on audio, I chose the only episode to also feature Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones, reprising her role from Doctor Who and the second season of Torchwood. Released before her spinoff series, this is also her first appearance with Big Finish. This story is set after the second season of Torchwood and follows Gwen as she reconnects with Martha. While I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I enjoyed The Green Life, it was still a very enjoyable listen. Now, I'll admit I've not seen all of Torchwood. In fact, I think I've only seen the first four episodes or so (I do intend to watch more at some point). As such, I'll primarily be focusing on Martha's role within this story as opposed to writing about Gwen and the role of the story within the greater scheme of Torchwood.
This story presents us with a very grim view of life after travelling with the Doctor. Martha has been back for a while now, her engagement has fallen apart, she's relatively isolated, and life has essentially returned to normal. The story begins with Gwen bringing a dead body to Martha's work and asking for an autopsy. However, as they examine the body, they discover more things wrong with it, leading to a scene where they must uncover who is actually an alien. Foley does a good job examining and deconstructing Gwen and Martha's relationship, and it's interesting to see all the different parts of their relationship within the episode, and how difficult it's been for them to keep in touch with their very unique lives. This episode isn't groundbreaking, and it isn't as strong as some character pieces I've listened to, but it still succeeds in what it's meant to do. It brings Gwen and Martha back together while providing a bit of a sci-fi adventure, and really, that's all it needs to be. Not every episode needs to be The Sky Man or Absent Friends (and I'm not referring to the unreleased Torchwood Episode). This story succeeds on both fronts, and is generally successful. It certainly was good enough that I'd like to both watch and listen to more Torchwood stories.
